Understanding Your Child’s IEP

As part of CDSBEO’s commitment to supporting the diverse learning needs of all students, school teams will be sending home your child’s Individual Education Plan (IEP) during the week of October 14th, 2024. To help you understand this important document, here are some key points to consider as you review your child’s IEP.

An IEP outlines specific goals, supports, and accommodations to help your child succeed in their education. It is a personalized plan designed to meet their unique learning needs. The instructional, environmental, and assessment accommodations include specific strategies and tools that help your child succeed in their learning environment. These accommodations could be adapted for home use to support your child’s focus when doing schoolwork.

If necessary, your child’s IEP might contain a ‘modifications’ section for specific subjects or alternative learning goals. These pages detail any changes to the curriculum expectations, such as adjusting the content or reducing the workload to match your child’s abilities. Alternative goals and expectations support your child’s skill building in areas outside of the Ministry of Education curricula, such as behaviour regulation and self-advocacy skills. Your insights are crucial in shaping the best plan for your child’s success. If a family has any questions after reviewing their child’s IEP, it is recommended to reach out to your child’s teacher and Special Education Resource Teacher to provide input.
