Anti-Racism Social Media Challenge Winners
In February, the CDSBEO challenged our students to create a social media post for Black History Month that represents anti-racism in their school and boy did they deliver!
Many amazing submissions were received, and the board is extremely proud of everyone who shared their talent, and this important message, through their beautiful creations.
Prizes were awarded for best elementary, best secondary, and best overall. Work was judged on creativity, originality, and expression of an anti-racism and belonging theme.
We are pleased to announce the following winners for each category:
Best Overall
Grade 6 French Immersion students at St. John Paul II Catholic Elementary School
“The Grade 6 French Immersion students at St. John Paul II Catholic Elementary School created inspirational portraits for Black History Month. They were first introduced to various notable Black Canadians and Americans. They had whole group discussions about each person and their achievements. Then, students created their mixed media inspirational portraits using black felt pens, tissue paper, acrylic paint and acrylic paint markers.”
Best Secondary
Nicole Desjardins’ class at St. Joseph Catholic Secondary School – (Pictured) Ellie Lalonde, Taylor Smith, and Samarah Belanger. (Not shown) Quade Mullin, Kyla MacDonald, and Jayden Tremblay.
“Black History Month celebrates the achievements of Black people across North America. We commemorate their lives and stories by celebrating their rich culture, heritage, triumphs and struggles that are an important part of our history. A team of volunteers from Mme Desjardins’ art class created this beautiful mural in honour of Black History Month. Good job panthers!”
Best Elementary
Melissa Roy Pidgeon’s class at Iona Academy Catholic School
“In honour of Black History Month, our Kindergarten classes at Iona Academy learned about the artist Alma W. Thomas. They created their own works of art that were inspired by her style.”
