Building Self-Esteem
Simple Ways to Help Children Feel Valued and Confident
Children develop their sense of self-worth by studying how others perceive them. Praise and encouragement are pivotal for children to develop a sense of pride in themselves.
It’s the little things that can be done every day that make a lasting difference in helping kids to recognize their inherent value.
There are several practical ways to help children build their self-esteem and recognize their worth. By incorporating these simple yet effective strategies into daily routines, parents and caregivers can create an environment where children feel valued and confident in their abilities.
Make Mistakes
Let your kids know that it’s okay to make mistakes. Mistakes are our best teachers! Model this by admitting your own.
Keep Track
Get an empty tin can and create an “I CAN” can with your child. Decorate the can and each time your child masters a new skill, or succeeds at accomplishing a difficult task (such as setting a new personal goal in school, or on a test), they can write it down on a piece of paper and put it in the “I CAN.” Occasionally, look at the notes in the “I CAN” so that they can see their progress.
Make Time
Spend quality time together! Telling your child that you love them is one way to express love, but spending time together and showing them that you want to hang out with them is particularly impactful.
