OYAP, Cooperative Education & Experiential Learning
Cooperative education, Experiential Learning and the Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) provide students with authentic and relevant learning experiences in a workplace setting. They also offer opportunities for an early start on an apprenticeship training in one of more than 200 career areas. OYAP is a program that allows secondary school students to learn a skilled trade at the same time as completing the requirements to graduate from high school with an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD).
The process begins with the student enrolling in their high school cooperative education program – usually in grade 11 or 12. Through the cooperative education program, links can be made with employers (workplace training partners) and an agreement is signed between the employer and student, providing the student an opportunity to learn a skilled trade.
