The Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address

On September 17th, Allen Smoke, CDSBEO Indigenous Student Success Mentor, taught the Central Leader’s Team about the Haudenosaunee Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen (Thanksgiving Address).  The Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwena is a significant expression of gratitude that highlights the interconnectedness of all living beings. This address is a philosophy and lifestyle deeply rooted in the values and beliefs of the Haudenosaunee people. It emphasizes respect, gratitude, and responsibility towards the Earth and its inhabitants, serving as a reminder of the importance of these principles in daily life. 

Ohén:ton Karihwatéhkwen translates to “Words before all else.” Traditionally, this address is recited at the start and end of gatherings—such as meetings, ceremonies, community and family events—to unify participants and remind them of nature’s gifts. By doing so, it encourages collective focus on their shared goals while promoting an appreciation for the natural world and the relationships humans have with it. 

The CDSBEO would like to say nia:wen ko:wa to Allen for sharing his Teachings and guiding the Central Leaders Team in bringing their minds together as one for the work that will be accomplished this school year.
